Urban Dance at Cal Poly

Urban Movement is the go to club for those looking for SLO’s budding Urban Dance scene.

After a name change last year, Urban Movement, formerly known as Hip Hop Choreo Club, is making big moves at Cal Poly.

The club is known for performing at events around campus. Some of those include Lantern Festival, Poly Cultural Weekend, and even the halftime show for women’s basketball. What’s more is that Urban Movement even hosted their own event to perform at.

Illuminate, Urban Movement’s winter dance showcase, was a huge step for the organization and the Urban Dance community at Cal Poly. This event featured dance performances from more than 10 clubs at Cal Poly. The show highlighted the growing Urban Dance scene, as well as promoted the dance community here at Cal Poly.

Urban Movement also has weekly workshops for those who want to be more involved with the Urban Dance community, apart from just watching performances.

These workshops range from beginner level to advanced and the style varies. So, there is more to learn more than just Urban Dance. Most workshops are student led and taught, but every once in a while the club hosts a professional workshop where an outside choreographer comes to Cal Poly. Most importantly, these sessions are free, except for the professional ones that have a small fee because hiring pro choreographers is expensive.
